A comment on common courtesy
Stuff happens in life and people occasionally need help from Mods to exit games without destroying the games for other players. Players who need Mods to remove them and delay games should provide a list of all of their games to the Mods. This is common courtesy.

@SierraLeone:

having external libraries that still are PHP5-only is hard to imagine but possible (and hard to fix if it's really the case, because age-old code from another developer that obviously has lost interest in supporting it ... good luck).

having some own php scripts with php5 commands that are not supported anymore by php7/8, or require more precise typing of variables, expressions, ... is very likely to be the cause here ... after all, php is an interpreted / realtime-compiled language, so changing the interpreter may change the results.
Theoretically it's not a difficult thing to fix, depending on how organized the codebase is – find the culprits, replace these commands with the more modern and robust versions as stated in the documentation, done. It might even be it's just one single line of code somewhere that makes everything stop working, like a database query that requires other syntax now, or a regular expression that needs to be more precise now ... It might also be that it's a messy business if the code base is less clean, having changes in a lots of places.

Both webDiplomacy and vDip are mentioned at times - was one created from the other? From a software perspective, is vDip an entirely separate codebase, or are there still shared components?
Hirnsaege (1903 D)
17 Nov 21 UTC
This is the main codebase: https://github.com/kestasjk/webDiplomacy
– webdiplomacy is like the main branch or main user of it: https://www.webdiplomacy.net/developers.php
– vdiplomacy is a parallel setup with focus on new variants, but the underlying base is more or less the same (though not necesarily the latest version)
– there are others too that went more or less far off the main branch

Would it be possible to get an email from admin when site is back online?
tobi1 (1997 D Mod (S))
17 Nov 21 UTC
@Strider: I do not know how feasible that would be. At least there is not automated method to send a mail to all active members of the site. But games will surely get a few days of extensions when we resume so there should be plenty of time for everyone to notice. Also I will try to give a more concrete date in advance when that is possible.

@SierraLeone: WebDip was initially created in the mid 2000s by kestas and forked by Oli into what would then become vdiplomacy. Both forks where developed in parallel since then but in the past we tried to merge new features of webdip into the vdip code base. However, due to the grown number of distinct vdip features in logic this requires more effort nowadays than simply merging the changes from the webdip repository.
Backend code is exclusively written in php and partially relies on features that changed with php 7. Adjustments for php 7 were made on WebDip last year but have not arrived here yet.

Actually I don't understand hoster politics to stop php5-service.
Hirnsaege (1903 D)

the php maintainers themselves stopped supporting php5 --> if there ever is a major security hole in the framework, it won't be fixed in reasonable time, if at all.

this means the hosters are in danger to run non-secure software on their servers, and if some 0-day exploit pops up, all they could do is let it destroy customers data until notized, and then pull the plug very fast, with no one able to export their data, etc. from that moment on (remember most people hosting things are really professionals). this is no professional policy for a service provider.

so pushing the customers out of php5 was the way to go the last two years, with lots of information about the hows and whys coming via newsletters, letters, serverlog warnings, ... at some point, shutting it down is the way to go to minimize risk and optimize costs for maintaining it in parallel to 7, 7.1, 7.2, 8, ...

(it's interesting to see that expensive, service driven hosters still support it, but you payed for it indirectly).

@tobi1 thanks. From my experience, branched code always does indeed diverging as you've alluded trying to merge in code from other branches simply becomes harder and harder over time.
Could this have anything to do with the recent change of clock, daylight saving time, for some cities?

Hirnsaege (1903 D)

none of the games are processing, as the the calculation of results, previews, interactive input, ... is not working, it's not just one game.

Unfortunately but somewhat expected, the upgrade to the newest webdip version did not go smooth and appeared also to be insufficient for our current issues. Thus, we are not able to continue yet.

I am currently testing the updated setup and hope to not find too many more issues. Due to limited spare time in the upcoming days and uncertainity on how many issues still need to be fixed, I cannot give a reliable date by now. Might be a few days but might also take two or more weeks if much functionality needs attention.

@CCR: According to our error logs the routine to generate the board map is also affected by the server upgrade and broken. Thus, I expect every game to break with the next phase transition when map images can no longer be retrieved from cache.

Thanks in advance for the fix ... going to be busy for the server and the players when it hit's the live version :-)

As for helping:
Server backend is not an area where i could deliver quality work, but if there ever is need for help in frontend (HMTL, CSS, JS, UX, UI, Graphics, icon systems ... anything that lives in the browser), i'm ready to contribute.
(i even had made some concepts a few years ago to improve usability and overview without changing the feel *too* much and was in contact with webdiplomacy people and Oli, but it never proceeded further).

Question for Alternative History nerds
In January of 1920, when Kolchak resigned in favor of Semyonov, a Japanese puppet, what would have happened if the Japanese had gotten Semyonov's Buryat puppet state to roll up the Trans-Siberian Railroad as they withdrew from Omsk?

Forced extend?
https://www.vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=49570#gamePanel

In this game, the mods forced a 5 day pause because of an issue a player had. I believe the mods overstepped their authority by not letting the players vote themselves on whether to extend/pause the game. Instead of a message unilaterally pausing the game, I would have appreciated a message explaining the situation and giving the option to extend.
