World War IV Team Game improvement ideas
The interest in the World War IV Team Game is dying and the public press is being filled up with ranting, improvement ideas and calls for a draw. The calls for a draw are being drowned out so move your improvement ideas here please.

I think most of the inequality between teams had to do with the team distribution, some of which is inevitable. My favorite option to help address this is:

Have 5 teams of 7, but have team captains pick the countries. But the process would start with each captain getting to pick a N. American country, then a S. American country, and so on through Europe, Africa, and Asia and the Pacific (grouped together), before repeating until all the countries have been chosen. This way, the success or failure of the team distribution would rest with the teams themselves. Captains could be comprised of players with certain minimums in number of games played here, points, and reliability rating.

Regarding 7 teams of 5 , after reflecting on the spread, I agree with Germany, who notes: "How do teams coordinate when they're all spread out like that?"

Regarding localized groupings of teams, I agree with Mexico, who points out: "The problem with Historical or Localized teams is the same one we see with Russia/Central Asia. Inevitably these groups will become self-sufficient in defense really quickly, and will be unable to be really destroyed during the game."

*cough* That was Oceania, not Mexico *cough* ; )

it should be a password game where the password is given to each of the 5 or 7 captains. Each captain pics the players he wants.

That won't happen. Too unfair. I'd pick the best players on the site. Why would any good players join a worse team? They'd all join the same team likely. We'd end up with a couple really good teams and a couple pretty bad ones.

I like the idea of G-man:
Say there are 5 captains: c1, c2, c3, c4 and c5 and they chose countries in that order. So c1 pick Inca, cos Inca seems a good country to play. Then c2 says "I don't wanna allow team 1 to get control of South America, so I pick Argentia, which has a good position too, cos has a corner". Then c3 picks Oceania. Then c4 must kno that if he doesn't choose a South American country he'll give chances to team 1 or team 2 to group 2 countries, which can be a big adventage... etc. That could be interesting.

If you were c1 which country would you choose first?

Just throwing it out there: it seems to me that a major problem with the WWIV team games are that they are plagued with CDs & NMRs, due to simply the amount of players needed to get one of these games off the ground. Perhaps we could get more team games going on variants that require less players, but are still quite substantial?

Variants with less than 35 include and more than 10 include:
Chaos/Chaoctopi: (34 players)
Fantasy World Diplomacy (12 Players)
Haven (19 Players)
Known World 901 (15 Players)
Rinascimento (12 Players)
World Diplomacy IX (17 Players)

I would like to see a Team-Game of Known World 901 - with 5 teams of 3.
quite manageable in size, but quite large in scope.

@thethirdon: Note that what I am proposing is different in that the process of picking countries "would start with each captain getting to pick a N. American country, then a S. American country, and so on through Europe, Africa, and Asia and the Pacific (grouped together), before repeating until all the countries have been chosen." You would only be able to pick from the same continent every 5th turn. I think what you suggest would result in a much more localized grouping, like the ones Oceania was warning against. But by having to pick through the continents in an order, teams will have regional interests, but won't be so localized that everyone is immediately grouped up, and there will be just as much strategy to selecting teams. It also declares all the team leaders.

I agree with G-man, especially because while some team leaders may see the need to pick countries to keep others from having continental control, others may not, which could result in some teams being spread out, with others in large groups, making some teams very strong, while others would be very weak.

Draw, Pauce, Cancel & CONCEDE?
it seems to me that sometimes a concede option could be handy; especially if one player is definitely going to win - For instance in Fall of the American Empire, civil war.

"Live game" pilot Saturday 19/11, 19:00 London time
"Live game" is a game played like a FTF game but on the net, it only lasts an evening as has 10-15 min deadlines. We are some that want to get these games a regular practice, and this particular game is meant to try out the preconditions for that.
