Training Programs
Should some of the better non-asshole players organize a regular schedule of games for beginner players to offer advice and help improving their games? I think that this might be particularly useful on some of the weirder maps where the tactics and dynamics are less standard and memorized than in Classic.

Voters Poll: which is the worst?
To start off, this has NOTHING to do with Diplomacy, so if you don't want to see it, mute it now... So the question is, which of the following 4 choices is the worst(choices to come in a minute or 2):

Anybody want to make a map?(map 2)
Ok so this one really is 14 players... it has a total of 8 new supply centers in it, so each nation starts with 3 centers...
butterhead (1272 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
once again the classic map, with Ruhr, North Africa, Apulia, Tuscany, Piedmont, Silesia, Bohemia, and Galicia now as supply centers... the powers are:
France,
Iberian(Spain, Portugal, North Africa),
England,
Turkey,
Austria(minus Bohemia and Galicia),
Lowlands(Belgium, Holland, Ruhr),
Scandinavia(Denmark, Sweden, Norway),
Germany(minus Ruhr and Silesia),
Russia(minus Sevastopol),
Eastern Balkans(Rumania, Bulgaria, Sevastopol),
Western Balkans(Greece, Serbia, Tunis)
Northern Italy(Piedmont, Tuscany, Venice)
Southern Italy(Rome, Naples, Apulia)
Midlands(Galicia, Silesia, Bohemia)

Seeing as there is now a country that starts completely inland, this requires that it be build anywhere... starting units are the usual for England, France, Germany, Austria, Turkey, and Russia(minus Sevastopol), a fleet in Sev for East Balkans and 2 armies in Bul and Rum, a fleet in Tunis for West Balkans and 2 armies in Serbia and Greece, A fleet in Portugal and North Africa and an army in Spain for Iberian, armies in Ruhr and Holland and a fleet in Belgium for lowlands, a fleet in Norway and armies in Denmark and Sweden for Scandinavia, a fleet in Naples and Apulia with army Rome for Southern Italy, fleet in Tuscany and armies in Piedmont and Venice for Northern Italy, and 3 armies for Midlands...

butterhead (1272 D)

It will be crowded, super crowded, and a LOT tougher for people to work... I just need somebody to do it...
orathaic (952 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
why build anywhere? that country is likely to have a tough time with breaking out, but you can win with only armies, plus build anywhere really changes the dynamic of the whole game...
butterhead (1272 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
because it's not fair to that country to not have the option to build fleets, even if you can win without them...
orathaic (952 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
i'll make the map if someone does he leg work.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ze_06wi_e06kao-Fl1mYyl4PiEKdL_PUpZZMtJCyob4/edit

This is the first step, it's the install file from crowded.
You need to list ownership of each territory, and yes/no for whether each territory is a supply center.

The second bit is the connections between territories, which doesn't need to change...

anyone should be able to edit that file.
orathaic (952 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
diplomacy is not fair. No country is in an equally balanced position to any other.

except in some of the symmetric variants like: http://vdiplomacy.net/variants.php?variantID=21
butterhead (1272 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
yes but there is no map in existence where one player does NOT have a choice to make both types of units... that's just another disadvantage added to an already tough position...
also, I have basic maps drawn using Paint... if that helps...
King Atom (1186 D)

You mean, say, something like this?

http://forum.webdiplomacy.net/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=842
King Atom (1186 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
And it doesn't matter if a player is disadvantaged in the beginning. A good diplomat can win no mater the circumstances.
orathaic (952 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
basic maps, if you're happy with them.

however you need to make seperate them out into layers. The center names and supply center symbols are in one layer and the territory colours are in a seperate one.

which means you only need to edit the top layer, and not worry about the colour of the territories.
butterhead (1272 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
that is perfect King Atom, only change I would make, and not even important if its made because it isn't a supply center, is that "maybe" I would put Ukraine with East Balkans, but that's optional... MY DREAM CAME TO LIFE!!!
orathaic (952 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
i might also note, though it's not important, that by convention supply centers are named after the main city in that territory while non-SC are named after the larger area (ie liverpool is a city, and wales is an area...) but i guess you don't want to change spain to Madrid.
butterhead (1272 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
I don't think name changes are really necessary... it just makes whoever does the work have more to do... now if that person WANTS to do so, they can feel free, but I think it would be just fine how King Atom made it...
orathaic (952 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
back to my anti-rant about fairness, in classic, either austria or gemany can win without fleets, but it's hard, mainly because of the stalemate line to cross.. you've probably added more stalemate lines because of all the extra supply centers (too many units crammed into a small space makes for entire areas which can be defended while just supplied by their centers)... and given that they are all concentrated in and around the main stalemate lines will not help... meaning, i doubt there will be solos in any case because of this, but it also means that this country central power will have a massive advantage once germany/austria are out of play...

except if you make it build anywhere, because that will mean 'germany' or 'austria' could be out of the game while still building fleets in and haning around the invincible italian peninsula... or off in turkey.
orathaic (952 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
only if that map is in two layers.

you need the top layer of black lines to be seperate (due to the way webdip draws the maps)
orathaic (952 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
ie like this: http://vdiplomacy.net/variants/Classic/resources/map.png
and seperately
modify this file:
http://vdiplomacy.net/variants/Classic/resources/mapNames.png
butterhead (1272 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
by the way, with there now being 42 Supply centers, the win condition would be 22... one more than half the centers...
orathaic (952 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
oh, and do the small maps
King Atom (1186 D)
13 Jan 12 UTC
Yeah, that's where someone else has to come in. I haven't mad it into a variant yet, butterhead...I've only drawn it out for you. I've just started learning the process of how maps are turned into variants. All of my creations are still in the drafting phase, with the exception of Habelya: http://forum.webdiplomacy.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=754 which is on it's way to becoming a variant.

If you want your map to become a variant, and playable at any rate...you'll need someone else's help and approval that this would be a map worth programming.

I can set up the black lines and names maps, but I can't take it much beyond that.

slightly wrong place to put variants. You should put variants here:

@ butter - if I put my mind to it I could have done K.Atom's stuff in a morning over a nice coffee and a cigarette (yes I smoke don't kill me...)

anyway I like to convert variants that I would like to play, but real life is holding me back, SO I've made a walkthrough showing how to make the 2 maps which are needed for Oli to upload into the lab (this doesn't make it 100% that it will be uploaded - consider Intellectual property or whether it is a worthwhile variant etc..) Because I believe that the more variants we have to play with the more versatile and interesting this community will be.

However I will not do the hard yards for an idea that has not been shown to be at least part way visual... If you want to make a variant then by following the steps that are shown here would be a good place to start:

@kaner- where could one get access to this walk through? because I think that MAYBE I may have some free time this weekend and next that I could work on it some...
King Atom (1186 D)
18 Jan 12 UTC
Butter, the " walk through " is the thread where my map was created:
http://forum.webdiplomacy.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=754
It's pretty simple. Just download GIMP and go through the steps Kaner put in there. Before long your map will be ready to be sent to the lab where it will be programmed and developed.

butterhead (1272 D)

As I said in the forum over there and am now asking here too, would it be possible to just download the maps from Crowded and edit them to fit my map, or do I need to start from scratch?
King Atom (1186 D)
19 Jan 12 UTC
Not sure if this is what you are looking for:
http://vdiplomacy.com/files.php?variantID=14
butterhead (1272 D)
19 Jan 12 UTC
Although I guess that would mean that I couldn't add in those sea territories very well... King Atom do you want to just send me an email with everything you have for it as an attachment and I will do anything you haven't already done later on? my email is on my profile if you want to do that...
butterhead (1272 D)
19 Jan 12 UTC
The process of making the blank map with no colors, names, or centers takes a LONG time, unless somebody knows a secret to finish it quickly(using paint for this step)?
butterhead (1272 D)
19 Jan 12 UTC
After spending every minute of free time I had for today(which was thankfully a lot tonight), I have gotten a lot done. needs a bit of improvement, and for some reason the finished sample is coming out weird, but still!

well, it looks good - can I ask why you simply didn't grab the smallmapNames.png file from classic [[ http://www.vdiplomacy.com/files.php?variantID=1 ]] and alter that?
butterhead (1272 D)
19 Jan 12 UTC
because that would have been to simple... haha no, idk, I just didn't think about it...
butterhead (1272 D)
19 Jan 12 UTC
So what would be my next step?
kaner406 (2088 D Mod (B))
19 Jan 12 UTC
well you need to make a largemap anyway - you could start there...
