1066 update
England got a bum deal in the first attempt of 1066. This should now be better balanced with a new SC in Norfolk (formerly East Anglia on the board) & a new sea territory, Central North Sea. Enjoy!

Best Empire in History?
This ought to hopefully provoke some lively discussion here. Which empire, do you feel, was the best in human history? I personally like the Mongol Empire the best, especially under the first few khans. It just seems like a very progressive system in a lot of ways. There were a lot of crap things, too, but every empire has such things. I feel they were able to take the best from a lot of systems and synthesize a new whole, and that's pretty rare in history.

Sorry another support move question
If I have three units and an opponent also has three units, and I assume he is going to support move next turn to one of my SCs, but I'm not sure which one, would I be covered if I just attack all 3 of his units? That way none of his support moves could work, right?

I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that. I didn't really think about it...
About infractions, I logged off every time, but discovered early on in the game that even when I'd logged off I'd often automatically log in when I went to vdip. I tried stopping that by always closing my browser after logging out, but it's possible I forgot that once or twice...
EoG: Only building 2 units (don't know if I actually forgot or misordered or anything else) wasn't a good start. Made a wrong guess the following autumn and then it was over for me... Not much to say really...

GG Everyone, Im happy with how that game ended. I knew Guaroz was goign to stab me, but once he did, it was apparent that he would solo, so I kinda gave up....
it was PPSC, after all.

EOG for Ottawa:

Early on, I liked my corner position. After a few initial attacking turns, I set myself up to hopefully work with GOD and ezpickins against Shep. However, I ended up not having a great position to actually do anything against him. Once my only fleet was destroyed and ezpickins attacked me, I was essentially pinned up in the northeast corner of the map with no where to go. I spent almost the entire second half of the game sitting there and support holding troops in a bunkered position hoping to get a draw out of it. I knew I didn't have a chance and Guaroz kept growing closer to a solo. I didn't think the alliance between Guaroz and achilles would last and it ended up not, but of course my position lent me no opportunity to help anyone defend themself. Overall, I had quite a boring game, entering the same orders over and over. But I survived! :D first CG I have survived in :]

Otawatomi EoG

I had the luck to find my ally in 1501, guessing a support move for him. So I could move West and things went well, not finding a solid resistance (butter already explained why).
So I took the NW corner in 1512 and started moving West. While moving, I tried to figure out how the game could end, having realized that with VC=27 SCs a 2-way draw with my ally was not possible. Since at that point I was having much more luck than Erie, I thought that...well...I'd have won. Not a thought about a possible stab, he didn't deserve him. Actually for a while I waited to give him the possibility to expand and have the right reward for his nice alliance.
Things changed a bit. What at first looked just like a bad turn (Spring 1517) was basically the key of the final. Ottawa positioned his units for defence, risking a mortal shot if I took Petawawa. I didn't. Turn after turn, I realized how important was that Spring in which Ottawa risked and won his survival. My congrats to Spartan.
I thought I just have to wait for Eire threatening the southern border of Ottawa, but in 1920... hehehe... I realized that LW & LE are bodies of water. No land bridges, you need a fleet to go through them! What a fool I am, LOL.
No threats for Ottawa, I started thinking what to do. I didn't want to stab my ally, I would have gone nowhere without his loyal alliance. But the only alternatives were a 3-way draw or Eire winning. In a WTA I'd have probably voted for a draw, I couldn't kill my ally. I'm not bastard enough and that's why I don't usually play WTAs.
Since it was a PPSC, I started thought that I have to stab him: he would have had his not bad reward anyway.
The following Spring 1521, with him moving to Lenawee, I thought "Now or never!" and I did it.

@ Huron. Sorry for the support against you in 1501. I needed an ally...
@ Kaskasia, Ojibwe & Algonquin. Good fight til it lasted!
@ Mississauga. Sorry for that 1513 convoy. You know... the enemy of my ally is my enemy...
@ Iroquois. Nice game. I wonder why you didn't try to retake Crowe in Fall 1522.
@ Ottawa. Nice final. Your courage rewarded you and you weren't defeated. Congrats.
@ Erie. Thanks for the nice alliance. Sorry, I couldn't beat my last enemy and had to stab you. I'm happy to hear you were not too disappointed. Congrats for your good game.

@Guaroz
I moved to lenawee cuz i saw you were stalemated.. so I knew you were going to stab me. I have no problem with it though, I probably would have done the same. PPSC is very nice to play every once in a while :)

This was honestly the first one of these I can truly say I didn't enjoy. Not a fan of the map, and just minor little things irritated me more than usual(like GOD's silly one unit attack, oh how that pissed me off more than usual)... The final straw was really when EvW retreated to my center with his last unit, at that point I just decided to disband units and let it happen as quick as possible. still looking forward to the next one.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))

@achillies. Some likes WTA, some likes PPSC, some likes both. All have good reasons for their choice, since they're basically 2 different nice games. What I don't like is when someone plays PPSC as if it was a WTA, or vice-versa. Since you said "it was PPSC, after all." I guess you knew what you were playing! :)

@butter. Yeah, I didn't like CG-IV as well, because I was defeated! :D :D :D
Jokes aside, I don't like this map too. But the only alternative for a 9 players map would be Hussite, that looks really unbalanced.

23 Dec 12 UTC
Ah yes the gunboat lol. I rather enjoyed it even though I got takn out. My main strategy early on was to take advantage of a mistake Huron made in the first year. That led me to a fast early growth, but unfortunately not all was well in my region. I was blindsided by the Ottawa-Algonquin truce, although I did expect Erie's attack would come eventually. At the end I'm happy that I held as long as I did in the two-front war and would happy to give another game a go, although preferably on a different map :p

@Guaroz's question: I was quite upset with the game by that point. I was baffled by how Erie could continue moving East, when a huge force was moving towards him. By 1520 I figured there was no reason to continue, so I entered holds for the most part.

I really wish to know why Erie continue his alliance when there really was no chance for him to gain from it after a certain extent seeing as Guaroz was in a strong position. I was hoping that the three of us could force a draw, but alas Erie wished to attack me and crossed his fingers that Guaroz wouldn't take what was rightfully his
rojimy1123 (1008 D)
23 Dec 12 UTC
Shep, I don't really consider it a mistake. When erie and otawatomi joined forces to take one of my home centers in the first year, they forced my hand. I had to abandon caution, move to retake it, and pray you wouldn't join the attack. But, alas, you did and consequently sealed my fate. It happens.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
23 Dec 12 UTC
@ezp. "I disliked a certain pink nation's late decision to fight the top player" I'm not sure if you really mean the pink or the yellow instead. Anyway, what you say is understandable. Just, let me observe that all players make lots of decisions each turn, so every players makes several mistakes. But since the pink won and the yellow had the best result aside the winner, I think we should assume they made less or lighter mistakes than everyone else.
About you giving up the last few turns, this is understandable as well. My personal point of view is that, since in PPSC does exist the "Survived" result, I'd fight until the end for any possible result different from "Defeated", that is the worst. My congrats for Ottawa were mostly because he fought until the end, the best he could with his few units. We could say that he did at least one mistake less than you.
But yeah, it's just a matter of points of view.

Jimbozig (1179 D)
26 Dec 12 UTC
Quite simply this is very bad play from this "àchillies" player. Some players simply do not understand good play, this is a major part of the game. Good for Guaroz for recognizing weakness and taking advantage.

Anyone who thinks that this is the difference on PPSC and WTA is probably wrong. Under any circumstance "achillies"' play was the same.
butterhead (1272 D)
26 Dec 12 UTC

Who the hell are you to say if I don't play well and that I play like that in WTA Jimbozig?
I don't, and I haven't ever plate for second place. Not even on this game, I figured Guaroz would stab me, that's why I moved some of my units back to my homeland. But, he stabbed and I lost. The reason why I pushed so far ahead was solely the reason of it was PPSC. Want to play a WTA full press Game on webdiplomacy? 50 point buy-in?
Or do you not have that many points on webdiplomacy? Or any? Yeah, you don't have any... You've been banned.... Hmmm.
Of course, we can do it on vdiplomacy, classic map full press WTA.
The way I see it, you are in no position to judge good play if your play got you banned.
Why don't you just put a sock in it and mind your own business.
achillies27 (1068 D)
26 Dec 12 UTC
Even if you are #3 in points here, i dont really care. I don't take Vdip seriously, as it doesn't count for GR. even then though, I always play to maximize my result, if I have a little more fun here.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))

@Ninjiard/Butterhead.
In the past, some player told me he resulted online because of his phone or because he didn't "uncheck" the "Remember me" option when he logged in. I can't be sure whether they told me the truth or not, so, since then, I always say to whoever asks that the most reliable solution is to "log out" when you've done (look my reply to rojimy1123 on this thread, 27 Nov).
Butter, is it possible that you unchecked your "remember me" box? This could explain why you log out the site as you close your browser.....
Jimbozig (1179 D)
26 Dec 12 UTC
I have played against you on webdiplomacy, "achillies." It's nice to know that you only are willing to "try" when ratings are at stake.
Ninjanrd (1248 D)
27 Dec 12 UTC
@Guaroz: Thank you for the clarification :-) so I will just have to log out when I am done.
butterhead (1272 D)
27 Dec 12 UTC
@Guaroz- No, I have it checked, because I am too lazy to log back in every time :P It automatically logs me in when I come onto the site. I think as long as you are offline in general(as in not on the internet at all) It logs you off even if you have the "remember me" button checked. I could be wrong, but I know for a fact I have that button checked and I have never had that problem.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
27 Dec 12 UTC
Anyway, the important thing is that at least one sure way to play safely does exist (clicking "log off" when done / when you can't pay attention to what happens on the site).
Other ways may be possible, but since I'm not sure I can't advice for them.
