A game where I am allowed to Meta-Game? O.o
Competition between you and your friends sure is fun, but sometimes its great to team up with them and conquer the world together. Well, if your looking for a game where you can do that then look no further. Sometime next week a game will be starting where you and one friend can team up to conquer the world. It will be a WWIV variant with two day phases. All that is required is that you message the creator, me, what country you are teaming up with.

Team Game Replacement Players
http://www.vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=8536
Replacement player for the UK and Amazon needed. If someone will be nice enough, the UK isn't in a bad position. This is a team game, and you'd have to respect that, I guess.

Also is there already a thread advertising countries in civil disorder needing to be replaced? If not, should there be a forum thread just for advertising inactive countries?

Creating Teams into variant maps
Until now every Variant maps considers each player independent and able to fight any other automatically.
But could be interesting to develop a way to create forced alliance teams, just like a country split into groups unable to fight each others (being the same nation...) but able to be controlled by different players?
Into the game they could then choose if cohoperating or acting separately, but never being able to steal SCs each others nor dislodging armies and so on...

Long ago it was foretold that there would be a variant map for the Russian Civil War. Patiently did the mid-American rodent wait. Diligently did he remind the creators of the past fan interest. In disappointment did he scurry beneath the sod to hibernate with his harem and his dissatisfaction with the world to dream of the Ukrainian Anarchists marching upon the steppes and the Bloody White Baron's neo-Khanate of the Bogdo Lama.

Also, its has been 15 months since various people began talking about a Song of Fire and Ice variant.

@gopher - I believe that Oli was hesitant putting games based upon trademarked / intellectual property onto vDip. Also - care to share some useful links to maps regarding the Russian Civil War (RCW) with us, sounds kind-of interesting.

To be honest with you it seems like it would be really hard to balance correctly, avoiding a Fubar situation. Also there doesn't seem to be much room for fleets - so another unit could take the place of that... any ideas?

@kaner.....War Trains?
kaner406 (2103 D Mod (B))
01 Jul 12 UTC
how many railroads did Russia have at the time? (we could make the railroads 'rivers' and then have them convoyable...)
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
01 Jul 12 UTC
I just know that there were battles involving "war trains" during the Russian Civil War.....like in Dr. Zhivago.

BTW, one of the guys in the next office at work claims that he had a great-grandfather in the Czech Legion.
Lord Ravager (988 D)

@kaner, I've seen into some Variants that a certain structure of the river system can allow fleet to run on the continent with decent freedom... :)

http://vdiplomacy.net/variants.php?variantID=47
kaner406 (2103 D Mod (B))
01 Jul 12 UTC
River systems aren't such a new idea, the trick to a variant dealing with the Russian Revolution would be to combine enough cross 'country' rivalry (ie. Czeck patirot / Ukrainian peasant rivalry) as to avoid a situation that lends itself to a powerful central power surrounded by smaller - yet unconnected - powers.

and at the same time allow for historical accuracy regarding the events of the time.
kaner406 (2103 D Mod (B))
01 Jul 12 UTC
unless you make it a 2-player variant - whites vs reds - but this would leave out enormous gaps in representing what white Russia happened to be at the time. (not to mention the foreign powers who attempted to intercede during the conflict)
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)

I think something like Dutch Revolt with trains that can move faster sounds interesting.
kaner406 (2103 D Mod (B))

I think I'd like to make a variant about zombies. Set in city somewhere. Players start with one 'unit' each and they have to defend against a zombie hoard... perhaps the hoard can be split into 2 players (ie... north and south) and the players have to work together to fight back, or betray for survival...

just a thought what to people think?
Shep315 (1435 D)
02 Jul 12 UTC
I really like that (perhaps I've watched too much walking dead), but alliances between survivor groups is an interesting concept, would there be rule abou zombies not attacking zombies? And is that possible? Worse comes to worse the horde could be huge like on FUBAR
kaner406 (2103 D Mod (B))
02 Jul 12 UTC
That's right, we could make several zombie hordes, and have them all ''friendly' to each other like in Pirates. Hey we could have a North, South, East & West horde all moving towards embattled survivor players. At the same time (using Zeus variant rules - ie... california) the zombies can continuously regenerate at their starting positions, but only if they control them, giving the survivors a chance to 'rid their town of zombies'

I'm slowly creating a new Variant, and next to have completed the two maps (small and large) but still I have to understand all mechanics LOL I believe I will have to download something like the game, and looking about...
Lord Ravager (988 D)

...Anyway, the crucial question is: As long as many people often complaint about a map being not balanced, is it a good idea to create a map which is basically balanced by its structure?
My BOTS (Battle of the Sexes) map has a basic exagonal simmetry giving all 6 players the same identical chances... Will it attract more players than an asimmetrical map?

myLAAN (1109 D)

Oh my, it's been 5 months since I last "worked" ony my RCW variant...

Basically, my idea was to make it more of a role-playing variant, where you play for the commanders instead of whole groups in the conflict. The Eastern front (Gajda, Semyonov, von Ungarn-Sternberg, Zhang, Mitsue) would be more loaded with each starting with 2 units. Once this part of the map is decided, they can either try to trek West for years (Siberia and Middle Asia having sooo many empty provinces) or take the quick way via Trans-Siberian railway. That mechanic was not yet decided though it would use the war train (very prominent part of the war, also - trains!) unit which should be able to convoy armies along it. The trains themselves would move like crazy but only among the railway.

Anyway, in the West, each character (Pasha, Denikin, Wrangel, Makhno, Pilsudski, Bischoff, von der Goltz, Ironside, Trotsky, Tukhachevsky, Vacietis, Stalin, Budonnyj, Kappel, Dutov, Kolchak, Syrovy) would only have one unit, making it pretty much like Chaos although the home SCs wouldn't be adjacent. Syrovy would actually have two since he's the doorkeeper to the railway in the West and so he shouldn't be steamrolled from the East until they duke it out there.

I think the modular build could be interesting and in the pinch, the numbers could be balanced so that players could play it like team game - Reds vs Whites vs Nonalligned (Poland, Japan, Freikorps, Turkey, Czechoslovak legion, Entente, Alash Orda, Black Army) although the Reds would then benefit from not playing in the East and having better defensive shape. Then again Reds vs Whites plus the rest joining who they want? Much replayability.

Anyway, some WIP pics, let me know if it makes some sense or even pick it up if you can commit more than myself.

Lord Ravager (988 D)
04 Jul 12 UTC
@gopher of course not LOL I'm trying to find a way to split the countries into 2 groups, if possible by programming: 3 Male and 3 Female countries which can fight only the other group, like they was one only army. Rules about canceled support against own armies would be applied between "buddies" but indeed 3 different controllers would add chaos and intrigues (like making secret peace treaty with some enemies and let some buddies in troubles and so on). But no attacks no conquers of the other 2 buddy countries would be ever allowed...

I was thinking about symmetrical maps and I had an interesting idea. If you start with a basic symmetrical map you can deform each territory as much as you want as long as the borders remain the same. This would result in a map that is perfectly balanced but doesn't look symmetrical.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
04 Jul 12 UTC
@LR....mockery is an expression of intimacy and affection, generally.

@myLAAN......awesome.....my thought was to have the unit transformation aspect of Known World and use the railroads as rivers with almost infinite movement. Could we have a REALLY massive map and several railroads? The West had decent railroad coverge.
myLAAN (1109 D)
04 Jul 12 UTC
I'm not a cartographer so I struggled badly with some usable map projection. I don't like "historical" maps from which I can't discern what part of the world I'm even looking at :) I used a globe one which is far from ideal since then the majority of the map is centered in central Siberia around Omsk and such, leaving really little space for the interesting parts in the Far East and Leningrad-Moscow-Kiev area. Solving this problem would allow a really massive map but adding more railroads would be difficult to balance, since they allow super high albeit restricted mobility and to make it useful in the West, the distances there would have to be higher as well, otherwise there wouldn't be use for trains there.
Lord Ravager (988 D)
04 Jul 12 UTC
@amisond yes it's indeed a good way to have the map looking like having natural borders, but in facts mantaining its simmetry
