Hall of Reliability?
Might I suggest a list of players with the highest number of phases without missing a turn?
Purpose?
Leif_Syverson (1626 D Mod)
17 Nov 12 UTC
make those of us who missed a tiny number of phases feel like immense failures...

Missed: 3/2776 :(
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
17 Nov 12 UTC
Perhaps a current streak of unmissed phases?
Devonian (1887 D)
17 Nov 12 UTC
Using the current streak would prevent anyone from moving up. It will only knock someone off who misses.

How about misses in the past "x" number of turns, with the current streak as the tiebreaker?
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
17 Nov 12 UTC
@devonian.....you can easily move up by playing more games than the players ahead of you.
Devonian (1887 D)
17 Nov 12 UTC
I guess you're right. But, that rewards active gaming, not necessarily reliability.

Using a set number of turns puts the emphasis on reliability, which I think would be important if it is to be called the "Hall of Reliability".
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
17 Nov 12 UTC
Well, we could exclude Leif and call it the Hall of Perfect Reliability.
Mapu (2086 D (B))
17 Nov 12 UTC
I'll play.

It's strange -- I actually did miss putting in moves one turn on the Mars map by 2 minutes but it didn't penalize me. It may only count builds or retreats as missed phases?
Devonian (1887 D)
17 Nov 12 UTC
Hear, hear.
All in favor say aye.

You might want to offer specific language for the resolution under deliberation.
ezpickins (1610 D)
18 Nov 12 UTC
@mapu: if you went on but didn't enter orders, it doesn't always count it as missed
Devonian (1887 D)
18 Nov 12 UTC
Gopher,

I thought you were joking since you have perfect reliability. (Along with me and Mapu.) I was giving lighthearted support of your proposal.

Unfortunately, a hall of "perfect" reliability will only be of interest to those who have perfect reliability. Anyone short of perfection would have no reason care about it. If there is to be support for a hall of reliability, it would have to include the potential for less than perfect players to be recognized.

One of my sitters missed two phases when I was away a while back :( Oli took the CD off my stats, but the two missed phases are still there, endlessly taunting me... :(
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
18 Nov 12 UTC
"a hall of perfect reliability will only be of interest to those who have perfect reliability."
I totally agree with Devo, "interest to who" is the crucial point.
I believe that the most interesting list would be the one with the most unreliable active players. Reliable players could be interested in knowing who is in. And who is in it would be interested in checking whether their efforts to get out were successful.
But I'm afraid that it would be seen as a sort of "Hall of shame", so it's probably not a good idea.
Then I'm inclined to think that these kind of lists, because of lack of interest or other reasons, are just not a good idea, anyway you build them.

DoubleCapitals (736 D)
18 Nov 12 UTC
My own stats:
"Reliabilty Rating: 98+ - (100%) (what's this?)
(missed 3 of 1108 phases, unbalanced CDs: 0)"
Aww, damn. But it's likely to go even worse because I'll be away for a full week.
Devonian (1887 D)
18 Nov 12 UTC
Guaroz,
I didn't say get rid of a hall of reliability, just that it would need to have allowances for people with a few misses, or that missed phases would eventually to be off their record. If it is reasonable to attain, then there will be adequate interest in it.

Zero misses in the past 300 turns or something like that seems reliable enough and attainable for someone who has dropped off the list. Or it can be 1000 turns, if you want it to be more exclusive. Or, anywhere in between would seem reasonable to me.
RUFFHAUS 8 (2490 D)
18 Nov 12 UTC
Oh how shocking.... I completely disagree with Guaroz. I think that a 'Hall of Reliability' *and* a 'Hall of Shame' are good tools for any Diplomacy community. Why would it be a bad idea to hold people accountable for their behavior? And if it's such a bad idea, then why are the numbers of missed phases tracked by the site and displayed on profiles. It's the same concept, only that the list captures the information in one place.

Leif_Syverson (1626 D Mod)
18 Nov 12 UTC
I already use global chat from time to time to compliment players who prove reliable and give them public recognition that I have noticed their reliability and have added them to my 'would play with again' list.

I also decry and attempt to shame players who repeatedly prove un-reliable in global chat in games.

I'm with Ruffhaus here. Online etiquette (like committing to finish a game you started??) is something that the internet could use a little more of. If new users see the community publicly and actively passionate about this, we encourage more of the reliable types to stay, and discourage the flaky types from remaining long.

@ Gopher, I'm statistically perfect (in the *almost* sense).. 99.9%
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
18 Nov 12 UTC
I think that the longest active streaks of unmissed turns would accomplish exactly what I want. I propose the creation on this site of a "Hall of Reliability" to consist of a list of the players with say the 50 longest active streaks of unmissed turns irrespective of their overall RR's. Perhaps an additional column that did list their % would offer an even more informative picture of them.
bo_sox48 (937 D)

I haven't missed in 560 phases on this site… on webDip I have to resigns, both because of uncontrollable events. I think it's just dumb to NMR, especially if you're around for the game.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
18 Nov 12 UTC
@Devo.
"Guaroz, I didn't say get rid of a hall of reliability,"

Devonian, I didn't say that you said get rid of a hall of reliability. Why you pinpointed it, I miss. I know you didn't say it.

You said "a hall of perfect reliability will only be of interest to those who have perfect reliability" that's what I agree with you: if the "list" is not interesting, what's the point in it?
Talking about "interest", you hit the nail on the head IMHO. That's all.

Then I added some more things of mine, otherwise why typing a 9 lines post if I had nothing different to say? :)

I said that a list about the opposite end, the least reliable players, would be more interesting than the "good guys" list. And I explained why it would be interesting for more people than the other list.
I'd find it much more interesting, for example.
And, if I'm not misinterpreting their words (please correct me in case), also RUFF and Leif would find interesting a list like that.

Then I added that it's PROBABLY not a good idea. "Probably" means that I could be wrong and this is probably what you, RUFF and Leif think and are trying to say. Am I wrong? "Hall of Shame" would be a good idea for you? Yes? Ok. Fine. Peace.
Just, it looks to me that the person who is running this site doesn't want to base his action on shame and blame. And to me also it would sound a bit unfair. That's why I said it probably wouldn't be a good idea. But, yes, I could be wrong.

Now, before I explain my last 2 lines, I have to say that I forgot a step, and that's probably why you all didn't fully get what I meant.
We said that "a hall of perfect reliability will only be of interest to those who have perfect reliability". Well probably it wouldn't be of interest even to those who have perfect reliability, but this is not the point.
The point I forgot is that a larger "good guys" list where you can see that Mickey Mouse is 47th because he missed 3 out 2489 phases and Donald Duck is 71st because he missed 4 out of 2353 phases wouldn't be of any interest anyway (btw, how often do you check current "Hall of Fame" list? I'm sure you'd check Good Guys list even less often).
And frankly, IMHO, lowering the range to last x-hundreds phases played, wouldn't increase the interest in it.

So:
- "Good Guys" list isn't interesting;
- "Bad Guys" list isn't fair;
(but yes, it would be funny having the Forum full of threads like "Sorry all, broke my leg and been stuck in Hospital a week long" by people trying to excuse why their RR sucks)
- And whatever is in between would have a variable rate of both flaws, depending whether is closer to the first or closer to the second.
That would explain my last 2 lines.

You didn't say get rid of a hall of reliability, Devo.
*I* (basically) said it.
But yes, I could be wrong.

Please mind: I didn't say it sucks or it's an idiot idea. Actually it looks good. But it's probably not.

@ Ruff.
"I think that a 'Hall of Reliability' *and* a 'Hall of Shame' are good tools for any Diplomacy community."
Well, the only tool I need is RR Setting when I create a game. It's all I need to avoid unreliable players.
Knowing who's the best or who's the worst is just a matter of interest or maybe just of curiosity.
If being forbidden to join new games (that's the REAL tool) doesn't discourage unreliable players, why should a list, I wonder.

"Why would it be a bad idea to hold people accountable for their behavior?"
Nice idea indeed. You could propose a list of people who's been blocked or muted by, say, 3 or more players, so we would know who are the worst behaving people on this site.
But...no... it also is probably not a good idea, instead. For the same reasons "unreliables" list isn't: shame & blame.

@Leif.
"Online etiquette (like committing to finish a game you started??) is something that the internet could use a little more of. If new users see the community publicly and actively passionate about this, we encourage more of the reliable types to stay, and discourage the flaky types from remaining long."

This makes sense. I'm with you. Well, maybe. I'd be with you, but first I'd like to hear what Mods have to say about this.
What I figure out is that they probably read, on Modforum, all complaints by people who can't join new games because of their bad RR. And I figure out that most of them are new users, because expert players should have learnt how to handle their games, I assume.
So how many are these users? How big is the problem? Mods could tell us. Because you know, you don't propose a solution if you don't have a problem.
Probably I don't see any problem because I join/create only games with high RR requirements.
So I'm blind to this problem and that's why I'd like to hear first from Mods: they have the best point of view.

Oli (977 D Mod (P))

I don't think a hall of Reliability is possible.
1. I do not track enough data. I can't how long you played without any missed turn. I have just the raw data.
2. The data is not really valid. If a new player screwed his rating too much I need to adjust the numbers a bit to give them a chance to reach 60+.

IMHO the RR should be just a tool if you want to stop unreliable players to enter your game. Most players are not interested in RR at all (having RR-restictions on open games is rather uncommon for example only 3 of 23 new games have this set).
Not being reliable is not a problem for the average player, because most do not care.
It's only a problem if you can't join as many games as you want, but than it's limiting the players options and these players learn really fast to improve their rating.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)

How about no unmissed turns and then listed in the order of total turns? So the set of 0's ordered by the largest denominators. We don't want Leif, double caps and butterhead on our list any way. :oP
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)

ezpickins (1610 D)

@Gopher: I know Butter didn't miss any phases until he was well past the 1000 phase mark, where you are at <600

Butter has 3500+, Leif has 2800+, and DoubleCaps has 1100+, all of which are well above the measly amount of phases you have played. In doing that, there is a much greater chance something comes up IRL that takes priority.

I imagine you play one or two games max at a time, while those of us with many more phases than you play multiple games at one time.

Based on this, you should get off your high horse about not having missed your phases.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
20 Nov 12 UTC
"sorry, no missed turns" was a correction of a typo in the message above. Oli just said that he could not measure streaks of unmissed turns; therefore, the system that I proposed which I stated to be a second best was the only practical method. I believe than even casual scanning of this thread for context would have led you to not make such a clearly ill-informed douch-y comment.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
20 Nov 12 UTC
that, not than
butterhead (1272 D)
21 Nov 12 UTC
For the record, my vote isn't for longest streak. its for a system such as this: every player who has <x number of misses(lets say 3) per every x number of phases(say, 250) is in the hall of reliability. that way someone who has, say, 750 phases and has missed only 3 can still be in.
BigAssMofo (1003 D)
