WWIV description
recently playing some WWIV games i noticed that the variant description is not sufficient, as it does not tell anything abou IST, PAN, and EGY and also doesnt tell you that fllet cant move into territories that are bordered by this arctic territory, eg YUK and SRG...it is not optimal that you have to send units to these territories to find out what the rules there are...and asking in the public chat might give away plans...

I’ll consider barely redundant any technical comment on this game prior to 1913, since this has been another one severely harmed by non-playing users. It’s my fault too. I’m not going to complain about this, I have created the game and if I remember correctly I did not set a Reliability Rating filter in order to join in.
Personally I have to raise up that threshold.

I’ve spent the most of the game trying to have European Union as a friend and trying to build the 4th unit, which I’ve not been able to.
I wonder why E.U. didn’t put in the draw vote. 2 or 3 years passed before 1915 when contemporary me, Japan and Australia had the draw vote in.

This said regarding the game.

Regarding the variant “War in 2020”

Isn’t the first year supposed be 2020 instead of 1901? Just a notice, it’s definitely a minor issue.

The problem here is balance.
OPEC position is almost unplayable. Before my last draw, out of 9 games 9 were defeats. No wins, no draws, no survivals. I refuse to think that all the previous 9 OPEC players were poor.
Same thing applies to Russia and China.
The reason seems to be the lack of the “build anywhere” feature. In order to build your extra unit you need to have your single home SC free at the end of the year.

Until the variant is not “build anywhere”, the number of zones bordering your home SC plays the major role in the countries growth; here they are in increasing order:

2 Japan
3 EU, S.America, S.Africa, Australia
4 USA, India
7 China, OPEC
8 Russia

Thus, especially after the first 2 years, the chance of having your home SC free at the end of the year is almost zero, because of moves and/or “malicious” retreats. Translated: you are unable to grow as OPEC, since you can’t keep 3 SCs and OPEC free simultaneously with 2 units most of times.

If you have a look at the stats (only 10 games finished, we can just have a rough indication) you’ll notice that the “performance index” order is almost the same as above: the leading countries are those with the least number of zones bordering the home SC.

Either the map is re-shaped, which is not my purpose to suggest, either the variant should be “build anywhere”. As it is now, it’s overly unbalanced.
Probably this won’t solve the problem, but at least Russia, China and OPEC will have a better chance.

Yeah, I wondered about EU's lack of the draw vote too. I deliberately withdrew my draw vote near the end in order to eliminate him and prevent him from agreeing to a draw.

I also agree that both re-shaping and build anywhere are both good ideas. I found several times that build anywhere would be useful as Japan's 2 neighbouring territories severely limits where your new units can go. Also, re-shaping might make armies more useful than they currently are. As it is, all SCs are coastal, which isn't bad, but a lot of the time players seem to be able to get around awkward coast situations with just fleets and can often avoid land-locked territories.

And ironically, an RR filter wouldn't have helped you too much in this case. India CD'd without being replaced and still has an RR of 99%. I have an RR of 89% and didn't miss a phase. The first SA player currently has an RR of 83% with only one unbalanced CD (presumably this one.) So, it's quite possible that before the game a 90%+ RR filter would have given you SA and India but kept me out. :P

ahahah, you're righ, gman, in this case an RR filter wouldn't have helped.
I am confident that it does generally speaking, though.
gman314 (1016 D)

Yeah, I think it would help in general.

I don't have much of anything to add. I find these kind of variants crap shoots. You need to get a good start or else you will never manage to succeed.

I got a build in 01 and thought I was good. unfortunately Russia and Australia worked together to force me to lose my gain. I made a dash for America and I think ultimately sided with the wrong American as the guy to whom I offered endless support never took it. Oh well.

I have only played this variant once, so I cannot really comment on the "balance" of it all. I played China which has been noted above as a disadvantaged nation. I do not really udnerstand why or how. I felt like it starts from a good position that can be worked very effectively. With press things could have been fine for me. However, without press I needed to rely on someone wanting to work with me, which wasn't the case here. But, that's somebody else's mistake, not mine ;-).
Russia here. I agree it seems there is imbalance, however this is the only time I've played the variant and I don't have nearly enough experience with it to add much to the discussion. I will say that playing it gunboat is really letting luck play a much greater role than most of us likely prefer. If you end up with a disadvantaged nation, the odds are against you without the chance to diplomatically improve your situation.

Australia on the lead, Japan 2nd place.
Russia, China and OPEC eliminated.
Jimbozig (1179 D)

Objectively in that game, Russia played selfishly.

I think Russia/China in this variant are like I/A in the classic, if they do not have peace until they both get established, they will be hurt, but if they work together they can be a great force.
Decima Legio (1987 D)
13 Jan 13 UTC
Jimbozig, when I argue about a variant supposed imbalance… I refer myself to gunboat play. It’s rather obvious that the presence of press compared to gunboat increases the balance .
It’s rather obvious too that if A allies with B… A and B will perform better.
I am talking in general.

The lack of the “build anywhere” feature is a problem for the countries with a large number of zones bordering with the single Home Supply Centre.
Building the 2nd unit is essentially a matter of luck, yes.
Building the 3rd and the 4th unit requires that your Home Supply Centre is still yours and free. In general, China, Opec and Russia will find it way more difficult to build extra units with respect to Japan or Australia.

This said, I am aware that “War in 2020” is not popular. We can forget about this discussion. I think I’ll simply ignore that variant from now on.

England got a bum deal in the first attempt of 1066. This should now be better balanced with a new SC in Norfolk (formerly East Anglia on the board) & a new sea territory, Central North Sea. Enjoy!

Best Empire in History?
This ought to hopefully provoke some lively discussion here. Which empire, do you feel, was the best in human history? I personally like the Mongol Empire the best, especially under the first few khans. It just seems like a very progressive system in a lot of ways. There were a lot of crap things, too, but every empire has such things. I feel they were able to take the best from a lot of systems and synthesize a new whole, and that's pretty rare in history.

Sorry another support move question
If I have three units and an opponent also has three units, and I assume he is going to support move next turn to one of my SCs, but I'm not sure which one, would I be covered if I just attack all 3 of his units? That way none of his support moves could work, right?
