To all players in my games:
I do apologize for my NMR's, 1 CD, lack of Comm in some games, and making phases with just hours left. I have been very busy with RL situations and it has been a struggle to get online. I should be ok now, but my apologize again.

Maybe I'm playing Gunboats wrong...
But when I start a gunboat, I generally choose a target very quickly. This then becomes either a fantastic success getting me to a draw, or a horrible disaster getting me eliminated. What's a better tactic?

So basically, what I was thinking is this: I get a certain number of players that are interested, pick a map(of the ones I have available to me at the moment, which is a few), assign a country to each player... Players then send me their orders over PM, where I will put them through. I will then PM the current locations of their units after that move back to them. it is essentially a gunboat-FoW, except they can't even see if their own centers are endanger from a neighbor or not... there will be no Press(we will be going on an honor system)... interest?

I am making the cut off at 11 players max(crowded), because my next largest map I can use is Chaos... smallest map is Ancient Med(needing 5 players) so 5-11 players. I won't be playing obviously.

Need at least 3 more, up to 9 more... my maps available to me are:
Classic(5, 6, or 7 players), Ancient Med(5), Crowded(11), Modern(10), Fleet Rome(7), Pure(7), Renaissance(classic with Switzerland as a Neutral Center)(7), Shift(each countries units start in a different country, must reclaim lands to build)(7), so nothing less than 5, no 8 or 9, and nothing more than 11(unless 34 players suddenly say they want to play a blind, no press Chaos game, lol)
orathaic (952 D)
30 May 12 UTC
that's fine, i really like the no map variant, where you just tell people the result of their moves and they have to imagine the map... though i think i'd want to tell them everything they need to make sense of their moves (so support failed, cut by [INSERT_ORDER_AND_COUNTRY_HERE]
GOD (1791 D Mod (B))
30 May 12 UTC
Btw: would it be hard to program that idea as a variant? For my unskilled brain it sounds like only some minor changes have to be made :))
butterhead (1272 D)
30 May 12 UTC
Not sure how hard it would be to program as a variant, I am using a fabulous computer program to do this, haha. XD
@Orathaic- I might do that, but that takes a bit of mystery away from it don't you think(you then know that [Insert Country] is an enemy, haha. I will think about that specific while I wait for more people to sign up.
GOD (1791 D Mod (B))
30 May 12 UTC
No dont do that!

:))
Just hope I'm not austria in this, or I would be screwed! England would be fun to play; at least it would be easier to know you are safe!
Leif_Syverson (1400 D Mod)
31 May 12 UTC
So you wouldn't even know if a support hold fended off an attack? That'd be crazy!

I'd be willing to give it a try either way, but I just want to know what information we'll have.

If just the position of our units (and obviously status of our centers) is known after orders, it becomes extremely challenging but still quite interesting/entertaining..

The next level closer to straight FoW but still reduced information would be having success/fail status for move orders, supports, holds, and convoys, etc. (kinda like the messages page would indicate for games here or on webdip).

If you provide any information about neighbors moves and it just becomes FoW, and without the actual map it just turns into a game of who has the best memory/record keeping process.

_____
On a different note, it would be fun to play some other maps besides classic as FoW, like WWIV, Modern, or 901.
butterhead (1272 D)
31 May 12 UTC
@lief-essentially yes that is the extent of knowledge, is where your units are. And I listed the variants I have available to me at the current time above, lol

@Leif_Syverson

So re: your comments re: FoW... basically I had the same idea as you and thought to implement some more FoW on vDip: http://forum.webdiplomacy.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=891&sid=b4e4b432e106672fe7350962e7cf8096

Ultimately the FoW process really messes with the webdip code. Oli says that it really is more of a proof of concept than 'real variants'. He would like to see FoW applicable with all the variants available; but the unfortunate thing is that FoW will stop working each time a new WebDip code is released by kestas.

So basically unless a variant is created with FoW specifically in mind (think Pirates or Rat Wars) then FoW will not be implemented in the near future for variants already in circulation.

That said there I am currently working on a new FoW variant: http://forum.webdiplomacy.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=893&sid=b4e4b432e106672fe7350962e7cf8096

If you want to vary any of the existing maps enough to warrant them to become new variants (for instance Modern with some new territories, or a 901 variant that involves special regions/movement rules etc... [+the FoW rule]), or create an entirely new one, then feel free to post your ideas & concepts in the web-dev forums, and see where they go... it takes a little bit of work to get these things done, but the reward is well worth it.

anyway, looking forward to hearing from you in the forums,
kaner.

Why no press? How would battle work? I attack....I don't take it.....so I try to support that attack?
butterhead (1272 D)
31 May 12 UTC
No Press because A) I want to keep it simple for the first run, and that means that everyone just sends me orders and I put them in. and yes, essentially, you are just blind guessing what you are doing, hoping you take centers without getting attacked.
you will be notified at the end of every year:
your unit locations, your Supply Centers you control, How many builds/destroys you have. in the event of retreats, you get a tad more information, because you will get a list of open retreat locations you can go to.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
31 May 12 UTC
Well, then I'd suggest forcing everyone on to the Classic Map for blind playing.
Leif_Syverson (1400 D Mod)
31 May 12 UTC
Clarification...

When you say:

"you will be notified at the end of every year:
your unit locations, your Supply Centers you control, How many builds/destroys you have. in the event of retreats, you get a tad more information, because you will get a list of open retreat locations you can go to"

do you mean:

"you will be notified at the end of every SEASON:
your unit locations, your Supply Centers you control, # of destroys you have. in the event of retreats, you get a tad more information, because you will get a list of open retreat locations you can go to.
you will be notified at the end of every YEAR:
# of builds/destroys you have."

Or do we not even know outcomes mid year?
Leif_Syverson (1400 D Mod)
31 May 12 UTC
Classic would be easiest to play blind, but I'd be up for any of the maps you mentioned.
butterhead (1272 D)
01 Jun 12 UTC
@Lief- every Season you will get:
Unit locations, retreats(and options)
every Year: centers you control, #of builds/destroys you have, retreats(and options)
so you do know if your moves succeeded after Spring, but you won't know until after fall if you lost a supply center that you already held, and if you get to build or not...

just confirming.. map is classic right?
fasces349 (1007 D)
05 Jun 12 UTC
classic fog? Or will the game no be on this server?
Orpheus (1418 D)
05 Jun 12 UTC
Sorry if you feel you already made all this clear - I'm just slow.... :^)

Just wanna make sure I got it all correct. So, I send you my orders, and assume I that have to be very specific with all the moves - like the original Diplomacy board game where the players write down their explicit moves...?

For example, I might send you:
London move to North Sea
Edinburgh support move to North Sea from London
Liverpool move to Spain via convoy
Irish Sea convoy to Spain from Liverpool
Mid-Atlantic Ocean convoy to Spain from Liverpool
Etc....?

Now, how will you tell us when something fails?
Will you simply say it didn't go through and we have to guess as to why? Or will you tell us who we bounced with?
And if we get knocked out of an area, will you tell us who we are up against?
Also, if we are the one who knocks someone out, will we know that? Or will we just find out that our move went through and never know that another player had to retreat from that area?

So, if in the example above, Gascony moved to Spain and was supported by Portugal, obviously my move would fail. What would your message to me look like?
And what would your message to the other player look like?

Did I set the record for the most questions asked in a post?
Am I annoying everyone yet?
butterhead (1272 D)
05 Jun 12 UTC
@Leif- yes, classic map
@fasces- game is not on the server
@Orpheus- If you bounced or entered an incorrect order, I will say (move failed), If it is a dislodged convoy unit, I will give you your retreat options and you will know why it failed then, but you won't know by who. so you will never know if it's Germany, or France, or Italy, etc. who is attacking you/bouncing you... you won't know if you forced someone else to retreat. in your example, if Gas moved to Spain supported by Portugal, your message would say
unit locations:
North Sea
Edinburgh
Liverpool(move failed)
Irish Sea(convoy failed)
MAO(convoy failed)
and his message would say:
Unit locations:
army Spain
army(or fleet depending on what they had) Portugal

yes I think you set the record, no I'm not annoyed.

Just wondering - anyone want to set up a game after this finishes and we all play out the moves we did? That way, we'd have a visual of what happened, although some players would have to have an elimination added to their stats because of it, so I could understand why people wouldn't want to.
