Anonymous Games
Anonymous Games grant liars a shelter to do there worst, making abusive and absurd offered and generally making me passionately hate this game, which can lead to NMRs . Having to be out there means you have to have honor, and enables revenge. I have seen allies pitch in by hopping from one neutral territory to yhe next in the name of their promises. This site seems to be for the childish.

You have the option not to play Anon games?
I was remembering the good parts of my previous dip hangout. Cept they only played classic. I may have to avoid anonymous games like a plague from now on.

"Having to be out there means you have to have honor, and enables revenge."

Do you mean carrying grudges from game to game? Because that's really bad.
Wah! Somebody lied to me in diplomacy! I thought this was a safe place! Wah!

Get over it. It's how this game is played, ya little baby.

I feel bad for the kid. When I started playing I couldn't help feeling angry at the ones stabbing me...

Hey kid: in Diplomacy, you have two choices:

a) Learn & accept that this is a game of lies and deceit, where "honor" is NOT a concept.

b) Go play Tic-tac-toe instead or something as soft as your guts.
Oh, and if your problem is that you don't know if your opponent is on your "liars list" because it's anon, then you are breaking site rules and metagame g just by using that list.

Kid? I am almost 50.I have been playing diplomacy for over 25 years. I hold at least 10% solos. My problem is adapting to playing by text. And as to this being how the game is played... there's more than 1 way to win. You can actually use teamwork, inspiration logic and passion to engage your audience. Yes I received an A in professional public speaking and sales presentations.... I have just accidentally stumbled on to a website of living millennial pricks. If judging you makes me a rule breaker then ban me, I prefer the company of the honorable.

You also have the option to block people, too, fyi. According to the help docs it prevents you from joining their games and prevents them from joining yours.
I'm over 50 and have been playing nearly 40 years. And quoting grades? That's something a kid does not a 40 something.

I personally prefer the "lack of honor" aspect of anonymous games. With anonymity, you can play without worrying about players being guarded towards you due to a previous stab or otherwise approaching you differently than they would otherwise. The common practice on this site is to treat each game as a separate universe to the best of your ability, as a player's actions in one game should not influence your actions towards them in another.

In addition, lying as to your intent is pretty much a core tactic in Diplomacy, although it can smear your reputation in the game you are playing. Teamwork tactics do work in certain circumstances (especially public press games, which is where I have seen them used most effectively), but you should always be prepared to deal with a backstab from anybody, even your closest allies.

This is just a ploy from Kingmaker Speech to make us believe that he himself is honorable and true to his word, while if you look at his game history, you can see that he is not.

Trolls and hypocrates are usually one and the same, eh?

The kid here says he plays Diplomacy, but failed to read the goddamn rulebook stating that treachery is perfectly acceptable.

One might argue that treachery is actually the most honorable course. Where is the honor in being allied with a player forever and stomp all opposition without hearing their own thoughts and wishes? A honorable player would stab everyone as often as possible, in order to keep everyone alive and with good odds of making a good game.

Or maybe not. Whatever really, play however you wish, as long as you respect the rules of the game and the rules of the site.

This is how the game is played. If you dislike it, honestly, get lost before you get the banhammer for metagaming (a forbidden aspect on every Diplomacy online interface, by the way).
Hypocrites not hypocrates. The second sounds like a doctor who has taken the Hippocratic Oath.

Thanks YouCan't, damn English and these vowels that sound all the same.
Crat (sounds like brat) does not sound like crit (sounds like Brit), although Brits are, as a general rule, brats so I can understand the confusion. Just kidding!
Enriador (1507 D)

For natural speakers of certain Romance languages (like me), the English "i" sounds much like the vowel "a" in that word... Hence the confusion.
Hit/hat. I don't know how they could sound alike. Short a sounds nothing like short I. But if you say so.

In English, the letter "a" sounds like Romance "e"; the letter "e" sounds like Romance "i", and the letter "i" sounds like Romance "a". "o" and "u" are mostly the same.

You mentioned the word "hat". In Romance languages, the sound the letter "a" makes in "hat" is similar to Romance "é" (like the English word "bet"). Same pronunciation, different vowels.
Enriador (1507 D)

The word "drive" also comes to mind. It's pronounced as a Romance "á", despite being written with the vowel "i".

@Enriador
That is all true for non-English Germanic languages as well. The English language just has a weird pronunciation for the vowels. :p
It's English's lack of diacritical marks. We use additional vowels and word etymology to determine pronunciation. Sometimes the exact same word can have multiple verbalizations. "The" can be pronounced with either a long or short "e".

Enriador, you're going to need to elaborate on this one because it makes absolutely no sense at all. Your prior examples are dubious as well for that matter, but I'm not a speaker of romance languages. However, in this last example given the vowel [i] in drive is pronounces exactly as a long [i] vowel in English. I cannot speak for romance languages, but it strikes me as very unlikely that [á] sounds anything like the [i] in drive. I was under the impression that in Spanish (a romance language) both [a] and [á] can sound like long [a]. Neither one sounds like [i].
Enriador (1507 D)

@Ruff,I don't expect you to understand the subtle nuances of English vs Romance pronunciation if you don't speak any Romance language... at least not before studying one of them a little (though perhaps not French). Still, I will try to teach you:

>in this last example given the vowel [i] in drive is pronounces exactly as a long [i] vowel in English<

In this last example, the vowel "i" in "drive" is pronounced exactly as an "á" vowel in Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, etc.

Check this link: https://www.macmillandictionary.com/pronunciation/british/drive_1

Can you see the phonetic pronunciation? "draɪv". With an "A" in the middle. The English language likes to swipe vowel pronunciations a bit...

>Your prior examples are dubious as well<

You sure? Can't you see the similarity in the words "hat" and "bet"? Both have an "é"-like sound, but different vowels.

The word "hypocrite" is pronounced "hɪpəkrɪt"."krɪt" is pronounced similarly (though not identically) to the English word "crate". Hence why I misspelled "crAte".
I think Ruff is speaking American English while Enriador is speaking British English. Hence the pronunciation difference, and the confusion.

A bunch of yanks discussing English? Add to that someone who has played Dip for 40 years who believes thar makes his opinion of greater weight, as if age=wisdom. Sonny, I'm old enough to be your Dad (ghod forbid) and I can reveal a great truth to you; everyone plays this game the way they want to!

+1 Enriador for that excellent summary of vowel shifts... There's an old book called "Loom of Language" Bodmer which is brilliant ... worth reading fot its own sake

The accents in Spanish don't change the pronunciation of a letter. They just indicate where to place the accent in a given word.

Looking for someone to take over my country (Not in a bad position)
Currently 13/35 countries remain and my country, Brazil, is in 8th place after some set backs with NMRs. Currently allied with the 2nd place country, Argentina, as a fight between the two of us will ultimately be the doom of our existence. Argentina has said that a substitute will not charge the alliance between our two countries.

Reply if interested in taking over.

Taking over Civil Disorders should be free of charge
Reasoning: the player who takes over a Civil Disorder is not just putting themself in a precarious position (as they must evaluate everybody's styles and strategies) but they are also saving the game's balance and fun.

In order to reward/incentive people to take more CDs, I believe that making it free of charge (rather than current 50% discount) would be for the best. Thoughts?
