Adjacency Championship
I'm interested in finding what territory has the most adjacencies in all of Vdip. Why? For fun.
If you find a new winner, please type in the Variant's name, the territory name, and it's terr-ID (this makes it easier to find).

Advertise your NON-live games here!
In an effort to compromise the pro-ads versus anti-ads for games: Post here for your non-live games to cut down on the number of ads but still advertise games. Post game link, WTA or PPSC, and the bet. Note: this doesn't count for special rules games.

The Circle
Recently been watching the new Netflix series "The Circle." It's a game show where the participants can only interact with each other through a "social network" where they can say or post whatever they want. Multiple people on the show are catfishing and lying while also forming a lot of great legitimate friendships. Reminded me a lot of playing Diplomacy

Who wins if two players get the same winning SCs?
See: this game
https://vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=41100

Both Colombia and Argentina got to 18SCs (the winning number on this map) on the same turn. Colombia was marked as winning. How is this determined?

Becoming a new developer on vDip
I'm interested in trying my hand at developing a variant and have some questions...

Firstly, sorry if this was better placed in the 'Variant Development Thread' thread, but I thought the subject was sufficiently different.

I'm just going to spew out a bunch of questions - feel free to pick and choose from them. It's worth saying I've gone and had a quick look around the code, but I think some of these questions are easier answered by humans than by code!

1) How 'involved' is developing a new variant?
2) Which are the tricky bits?
3) How much boilerplate is there?
4) Is it a good way to learn JavaScript (I already know some other languages)?
5) Roughly how long would a simple variant take to make? Any useful pointers?

I made a variant creation guide: https://docs.google.com/document/d/17oFVvGE8w2HQU-5IeNecFxl4x7VZ0OM2ApjqXY9gi6A/edit?usp=sharing

No coding is needed, though it will be helpful for the implementation of special rules.

That's incredibly helpful, thank you!

I was mainly looking to do some coding, so I'm less excited now. That said I'm very impressed at how easy it's been made to make your own variant. Maybe I'll think about making one with some strange rules...

For me the map drawing and the definition of territories and borders is very tedious. You will get much earlier a result if you do not start with a 650+ territory variant.
For existing special rules the existing code snippets for the required changes just have to be copied to your new variant. So no real coding required.
If you plan to develop a new special rule though it is a bit different of course. Even a seemingly simple change might be very involved.

I recommend to install vDip on an own local development server, if you have the skills for that. Then you have much more flexibility and do not depend on Oli's help. If you plan to implement new special rules a local server is mandatory. But for a simple map variant vdip's dev area is enough, as well.

If you are interested to do some coding, how about doing some general dev work for webdip and vdip? The list of feature requests and issues is still long:

If you're interested in doing some coding for the sites, like tobi said we can always use the help. Feel free to send me a pm or you can also contact me at webdipmod@gmail.com and we'll get any ramp up questions answered for you. The site is open source and in PHP, with more info available here. https://vdiplomacy.net/developers.php

Also there are still a lot of interesting rule-changes to do.
For example a way to control secondary powers.

Also to answer your questions:
1) Map-Changes are quite easy, as I have developed a set of tools to handle this without coding.

2) Custom rule-changes. You need a good knowledge on how the webdip code works and it's limitations, so you know what and how to change the code. For example the transform-command is implemented as a "support" that gets some special treatment.

3) Rules already implemented in some variants can be reused, but new rule-changes are tricky.

4) It's more a PHP thing. Javascript knowledge is more important for new interface-features, not for variants. Are a few variants use Javascript to change the interface (different icons) or the way they interact with the interactive map. But nothing complex.

5) Depends how fast you are. I can do alternate-maps in about a day (if my family let me), and need a few more days for improvements. I really like to optimize unit-/ and name-placement so the board-state is always easy to get. But my first variant did take a few weeks.

And as tobi mentioned: Install the code on your own server and give it a try. Make sure to install the vDip-code, not the webDip-code to get all the variants.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks, everyone!

I don't have the knowledge (or resources?) to host my own server, so that seems to rule out creating new rules. That's not completely put me off the idea of trying to make a new variant, though - I'll have a ponder. Thanks again.

You always need your own "server"-software if you want to do some PHP coding.
But it's rather easy. YOu can use XAMPP for windows to instal a local HTTP and SQL server.
