what's the deal with connecting to vdip?
I can just now safely connect to vdip every day after several months. Other players have commented the same to me. What has been the deal?

Sitter needed
Starting Friday I am going to be away for 11 days so I was wondering if someone could sit for me in my games.

The only issue with this, is I am a moderator, so I am not sure how this would work...

FoW Orders
Why the orders archive can't be seen in FoW?
Sometimes there is an arrow so misleading you may think the support was given in the wrong direccion, or things like that. Some arrows are not conclusive, but still you can see them, so you should be able to know exactly what move they were, shouldn't you?

After months of internet connectivity issues, I'm making my return (hopefully) to VDip. Could anyone give me a quick rundown of what's happened since I left (roughly when Classic VS was introduced)?

A surprisingly strong FvA Opening:
Dear President Eden;

I believe I may have stumbled upon a very powerful FvA opening for Austria. I invite you to a series of games investigating the new opening.

Favorite Variant?
What is your favorite variant (in which you've played at least one game to completion) and why? How do special rules, if any, impact the variant and your like or dislike of other variants?

If the game is not available here, please give a link if possible.

I really like the ClassicVS variant. It warrants a great set-up for pre-determined team games, or a funky combination (say, Italy, Turkey, and England going at it).

I also Fog of War, GreyPress, and Economic.

For my non-classic map, probably Pure. That one is great, especially when it's WTA, anon, and public press only.

Sengoku......it is impossible to win against competent opponents. So it rewards survival. I think of it as a balanced version of Rinascimento.

Medieval Diplomacy, I always have a soft spot for this variant, it's on my Recent Work page on the dev

Pure, Sengoku, Rinascimento, fog of war, 1066, Duo, hundred, sail ho, Greek and WWIV.

Those are my 10 favs.

I love 1066, but I just recently was able to start an 1897 and a FoW, both of which I look forward to.

1066 is a quick game, and the fog of war is fun, and I always get Normandy so I win a lot.

1066 is awesome... ps I helped develop it :)
Shep315 (1435 D)

1066, Germany 1648, Mate Against Mate, WWIV, Rinascimento, and Colonial would have to be my favorites
BenGuin (1529 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
WWIV is coll, but I'd say that by the end of the game, there's going to be a lot of stalemate
BenGuin (1529 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
Rinascimento is also great, but some powers are not fair... I'd say that regular Classic is still the best
Shep315 (1435 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
yes I am curious to see if anyone ever will solo on a full press WWIV or if all the wins will be gunboats on that map, I must admit I think it would be interesting to see a more "historically accurate" version of classic, and by that I mean Germany being more powerful than say Austria starting out, basically having the nations that were more powerful historically being more powerful at the beginning, although that would probably need a lot of tweaking to make it work well

Why don't we start with a reasonable bar, fasces. Try not NMRing with 8 units.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)

@Shep----half the German GDP passed through the Ruhr, and Munich was a relative backwater before the end of WWII. The main reason Munich is important now is because the Americans were in charge of it in the immediate aftermath, and so, the Berlin banks and insurance companies picked Munich over say Hamburg for their relocation away from the Russians. An accurate Classic would need a lot more territories and SCs to provide gradation of power. Italy and Turkey should probably be about even. I'm not sure how you balance it beyond that. The Austria navy was not as strong as probably even the Italians and Russia certainly wasn't the naval power that Britain was.
airborne (970 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
The Austrian Navy was more than a match vs the Italian, while smaller was had better ship quality than the Italians, while 330/1000 recruits entering the Italian armed forces, 220/1000 in Austria (Note this is much favourable to Germany 1/1000 and France 68/1000) If you look up the Adriatic Campaign during WWI you will find that Austria got the better of it most of the time with only 372,000 warship tonnage in 1914 gave as good if not better than the Allied Navy. BM Powell and I are very Pro-Austrian, I had an old e-mail talking about the merits and demerits of having Army Trieste in 1900 alas the message has been lost...

With Medieval Diplomacy:

Won't HRE get too big an advantage starting with 5 scs?
Medieval looks really promising.

@benguin - 1066? Really? I don't remember you being involved in that. A couple of people threw in the odd idea but it really came down to me and Tadar to make it happen.
Hellenic Riot (1267 D)

1900 is a more balanced version of classic. It'd be pretty cool to have that variant here, but it has two special rules which could be problematic.

@The Ambassador
I was the one brewing the weird ideas (most of them regected) and I would agree that it was only you two for most of them, but in the last stage of the development I was there commenting... thou not as often as you two since I was kinda in a different timezone and had to catch up every day... it was a pain sometimes...
Shep315 (1435 D)

@Gopher, Airborne
yes it would take quite a bit of tweaking to get a historical version of classic, especially in Germany

Oh, I like Haven a lot too.

Ones I don't like are the ones with glaciation and/or heat waves getting rid of SC's in the north or south. Especially the heat wave ones, because Italy and Turkey are already tricky enough.
@benguin - crazy ideas can help a lot. I poo-pooed tadar's idea about hadrian's wall and its access, yet in hindsight i see it as one of the great challenges in 1066.
G-Man (2466 D)
26 Jul 11 UTC
Yeah, things like railroads, wing units, hold and support units, economics, countries with home centers far from their base of operations... don't always seem like good ideas at first, but if implemented with balance, they can lend variety to the game and make the game much more challenging and rewarding.

Meta-gaming, or Telepathy?
I'm a little baffled, in a game of anonymous gunboat Modern Diplomacy II (http://www.vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=2612), how Egypt and Ukraine were able to coordinate an attack on Russia (me) in Georgia. Either an extremely lucky guess, telepathy, or cheating (violating the spirit of the game, insofar that it's ANONYMOUS and GUNBOAT). Can anyone help me understand this further?

automatical disbanding!
Hi Oli, could may implement a function, that if in a retreat phase on a unit the only possibility to do is disbanding this is just set automatically?
that would prevent many games to just take longer because of people pissed and not putting the destroy order....
