Actually, more specifically, everyone agreed to a Pause, but gopher27 wouldn't have it so he'd rather ruin the game by letting phases continue, or to cancel.

Well in his defense, joining a game and then in year one asking for a pause for 2 weeks, a bit rude to the other players...

Let me rephrase that, asking for a pause in year one when it isn't an emergency, is rude to the other players...
also, I grant pauses about 95% of the time if someone asks, but there is no way in HELL I would grant that pause, so you really can't hold it against gopher, he is completely justified in his actions.

Dumb pause request in my opinion. Also came from the guy who openly admitted on the forum he just got tired of the game and just left everything CD last time... I say let him CD and then draw so he loses the points as punishment and he gets the resign on his record.

And this is coming from me, the guy who (if you pay any attention to the forums) asks for pauses for other people all the time...

I see I'm in the wrong, at least as the public is concerned but I don't agree one bit. You say petty rivalry? That's not it one bit regardless of what goes on in the background between him and I. We had an excellent game with a plethora of discussions and negotiations, which is now wasted because a single player out of 7 refused to hit the Pause button.

It was rude to start a game and then leave for 2 weeks, yes, but if the group as a whole has already issued Pause requests, then I find it equally rude to stand against everyone else and force the cancel.

then you stand alone on that regard... now if the game was in like, 1908 or something later in the game, and this occured, It would be different, because that would just be him trying to get his way because he wasn't doing great or some other excuse... but this is the beginning of the game... no one wants to start a game just to pause it after 2 turns... everyone else in the game is just willing to accept it, Gopher doesn't want that, because he would rather cancel, get his points back, and go to a game that will actually be Playing over 2 weeks(just as many of us would if we were in the situation)... Players are not obligated to accept Pause, Cancel, or Draw... If he doesn't want to pause, thats his choice but then he suffers a CD in the game, but with 6 votes to cancel, it wont matter... if someone doesn't want to cancel, thats up to them, but then they suffer a CD in the game... its a chain reaction ya see...

It was extremely fun game, too bad it was ruined by two people who both wanted 2 weeks pause.

And kudos to Plenoge for responding to Diplomatic messages in French when he was France. I wish I could remember now, but I once played a game in which the German player typed with a German accent in all messages. It is that little bit of extra effort that makes all of the difference.

I sometimes do that in what I call "X-Men style." In the old X-Men comics, you had people from all over the world, but they all spoke English. So in order to reinforce "we are from different countries" they would occasionally toss a "tovarisch" or "mein gott" or what have you into there. So, for instance, as France, I might say, "Oui, consider the English Channel DMZ'ed." Or "Sacre bleu! We did not agree to you in Burgundy!"

Amby, SacredDigits and I are easy to spot in anon games. I should probably avoid joining them given the informational disadvantage.

Nah, being gratuitously whatever country you are is half the fun of Diplomacy. Take that away and it looses half the flavour.
