what's the deal with connecting to vdip?
I can just now safely connect to vdip every day after several months. Other players have commented the same to me. What has been the deal?

Sitter needed
Starting Friday I am going to be away for 11 days so I was wondering if someone could sit for me in my games.

The only issue with this, is I am a moderator, so I am not sure how this would work...

FoW Orders
Why the orders archive can't be seen in FoW?
Sometimes there is an arrow so misleading you may think the support was given in the wrong direccion, or things like that. Some arrows are not conclusive, but still you can see them, so you should be able to know exactly what move they were, shouldn't you?

Wow!
After months of internet connectivity issues, I'm making my return (hopefully) to VDip. Could anyone give me a quick rundown of what's happened since I left (roughly when Classic VS was introduced)?

A surprisingly strong FvA Opening:
Dear President Eden;

I believe I may have stumbled upon a very powerful FvA opening for Austria. I invite you to a series of games investigating the new opening.

A player asked for a pause during the 1st year and then disappeared. We all agreed to cancel, but are left with the one person who left. A little help?

Favorite Variant?
What is your favorite variant (in which you've played at least one game to completion) and why? How do special rules, if any, impact the variant and your like or dislike of other variants?

If the game is not available here, please give a link if possible.

New WWIV games: players needed
There's two WWIV games out there that need players over the next 3-4 days: a 20 point bid for moderately experienced players (gameID=2858) and a 5 point big game (don't know the number, but search and you'll find it) for those that want a cheap game. Sign up people!

France v Austria, S 1901 Mar - Pie.
I am convinced that this is actually a very strong opening; I have not devised a winning defense for Austria yet...

move Trieste to Venice
Gobbledydook (1083 D)
24 Jul 11 UTC
That kinda requires hindsight.
Is there any way to beat this opening, without moving Trieste to Venice? Or can it be demonstrated, that opening to Venice does not lose out to the other French openings?
guak (1262 D X)

Personally I have done well moving trieste to venice against any opening. But yes it is particularly effective against the Piedmont opening.

in F vs A and i was France, i DON'T ever go to Albania... Italy and Germany is the two countries that is fought over... it's the main piece to winning...
BenGuin (1529 D)
24 Jul 11 UTC
However there's one way for France to get out of this mess... First, the fleet have to go to atlantic... then when the Austrians move to Venice, France can go for tuscony and later Rome and Tunis, then last but not least, naples
Gobbledydook (1083 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
Yes, yes, but I tried it out in a sand box; Austria won by taking StP/Swe while France was busy defending Venice.
BenGuin (1529 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
hmm intresting
Gobbledydook (1083 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
The problem really is that Austria can mobilise far quicker than France can to the Italian peninsula, and following A Tri - Ven, F Ven - Apu in 1902, France has the guess of A Rom - Nap or hold. A correct guess will only make it even, while a wrong guess loses in Italy. Meanwhile, the mere need to send more fleets to the South to try to hold part of Italy, coupled with the initial build handicap from Pie - Tus, means Austria can frequently overrun Scandinavia. From my experience Germany is usually recouped but Austria wins from rushing to 18.
Gobbledydook (1083 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
I will however test a theory: I will try to use A Rom as a decoy. See what happens.
BenGuin (1529 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
yea...
Even if F Tri -> Ven beats the Piedmont opening... seems like it would take some stones to dial that up. You're really losing momentum if France plays a non-Piedmont opening.
BenGuin (1529 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
hmm
Gobbledydook (1083 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
Rome as a decoy does not work. The winning line for Austria is to rush Kiel, and then saturate Scandinavia with as many armies as possible.
Gobbledydook (1083 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
I will need to test F Tri - Ven against the Northern and Southern openings.
Disregard Italians, acquire Swedish?
Gobbledydook (1083 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
Yes. Italy is eventually regained because if France devotes mountains of resources to keep those 3 centres, he will get overrun in Germany and that is also a losing proposition.
Gobbledydook (1083 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
I assume that my long-time FvA tester, Mr. Eden, will be very happy to do that testing?
I am. When shall we get started?
Gobbledydook (1083 D)

Well what about after the Vdip cup?
I feel like this research could be helpful for the playoffs. Maybe we could even hoard it and keep it secret and use it as our secret key to domination.

...or we could just wait.
Gobbledydook (1083 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
Oh well, I am in the roundrobin for the playoffs and you see, I'm supposed to do 4 games this week.
Maybe after the roundrobin?
Sounds good.

Alright, we all know phpdiplomacy code doesn't color a few Mediterranean islands, ever Crete and Sardinia. I note that in the beginning of Fog of War they're also greyed out, what sea moves (if any) color them in?

Meta-gaming, or Telepathy?
I'm a little baffled, in a game of anonymous gunboat Modern Diplomacy II (http://www.vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=2612), how Egypt and Ukraine were able to coordinate an attack on Russia (me) in Georgia. Either an extremely lucky guess, telepathy, or cheating (violating the spirit of the game, insofar that it's ANONYMOUS and GUNBOAT). Can anyone help me understand this further?

automatical disbanding!
Hi Oli, could may implement a function, that if in a retreat phase on a unit the only possibility to do is disbanding this is just set automatically?
that would prevent many games to just take longer because of people pissed and not putting the destroy order....
